Nagaland University, the 13th Central University of India and the only one in Nagaland, was established through the Nagaland University Act, 1989 (No. 35 of 1989) and formally came into existence on September 6, 1994. Before this, the region fell under the jurisdiction of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), with campuses at Kohima and SASRD-Medziphema. Initially, due to infrastructure challenges, the university functioned from Kohima as an interim headquarters. The permanent headquarters at Lumami in Zunheboto district became operational in mid-2010 after necessary construction. Academic departments were established in 1997, primarily based at Lumami. Currently, the university has three campuses: Headquarters at Lumami (Zunheboto district) Kohima Campus at Meriema (Kohima district) Medziphema Campus (School of Agricultural Sciences, Dimapur district) The former Dimapur campus (School of Engineering & Technology) was shifted to Kohima in 2024. Nagaland University comprises 44 departments offering Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Ph.D. programmes across various disciplines including Arts, Commerce, Science, Agriculture, Engineering, and Management.
